Michelangelo met Tommaso dei Cavalieri in 1532. Michelangelo made many erotic cartoons for him, including the Rape of Ganymede[2], The Punishment of Tityus[3] (showing a vulture gnawing at the hero’s liver). Both these heroes symbolized the “fire that burned in him”. This cycle in homage to Cavalieri was completed by a third hero, Phaethon[4], in his chariot hurtling down into the Po. [5]
